British drivers urged not to travel during record-breaking Christmas holiday period | transport

Drivers are being urged to avoid traveling on major routes for six hours on Friday and Saturday, with record levels of Christmas holiday traffic expected to lead to long queues on UK roads.

The RAC and transport analytics company Inrix forecast a total of 29.3 million festive journeys will be made between Wednesday and Christmas Eve, the highest figure since the RAC began recording data in 2013.

On Fridays and Saturdays, roads are likely to be busiest between 1pm and 7pm.

Hotspot areas where queues are expected include the M3 between its junction with the M25 and the south coast, the counterclockwise M25 between its junction with the M1 and the M23, and the M53 from Chester to Liverpool.

The RAC surveyed 2,100 UK adults and found that around 3 million leisure car trips were planned for Friday, with a further 3.7 million planned for Saturday. Getaway traffic is expected to peak on Christmas Eve, with 3.8 million people scheduled to make the trip.

RAC spokeswoman Alice Simpson said: Our research shows that with Christmas falling on a Wednesday this year, many drivers will be busy with holiday travel in the lead up to the big day.

Holidays start to ramp up on Friday, but Saturday, which, like Christmas Eve, roars in, looks particularly difficult. Traveling outside of peak hours may be the only way drivers can miss the worst of the traffic.

A separate RAC poll of 1,074 adults found 53% of people said they plan trips by car because it is more flexible and convenient.

More than a third (35%) said public transportation would take too long to travel, and 34% said public transportation was not a practical option for them because they were traveling with multiple people or had a lot of luggage.

National Highways said more than 95% of roadworks on Highways England and the main A road network will be removed from 6am on Friday and will not be restored until January 2.

This includes 45 miles of roadworks on the M1 while additional emergency smart motorway stopping zones are installed.

National Highways customer services director Andrew Butterfield said: With more people expected to travel over the festive period and the recent storms causing widespread disruption, it is important for drivers to plan ahead and take extra care on the roads. It's important.

To help you travel more smoothly, we have eliminated roadworks on 95% of the roads we manage.

Rail engineering work is also expected to put further strain on roads with several lines closed over the festive period.

London Liverpool Street station will be closed from Christmas until 2 January. London Paddington will also be closed from Friday 27 December to Sunday 29 December.

There will be no direct flights between Crewe and Liverpool from Saturday 28 December until Friday 3 January and services between Crewe and Manchester will be reduced.

Services in the Cambridge area will be suspended from Friday 27 December to Sunday 5 January, and there will be no trains between Harpenden and London from Saturday 21 December to Sunday 29 December.

There are also concerns that there will be disruptions due to a shortage of train operators.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
