The bitter legal dispute between Arm and Qualcomm over chip design licenses will go to trial on Monday, in a high-stakes battle that will highlight how two of the world's biggest chip companies and former allies turned on each other. Arm sued Qualcomm, in what it described as a last resort measure to protect its intellectual property. This is the first time in its 34-year arms history that it has taken such a drastic step, putting its confidential licensing deals on full display in a public courtroom.

Qualcomm, on the other hand, is no stranger to intellectual property litigation, having previously taken on companies like Apple, which challenged Qualcomm's patents in a broad dispute that ended in a settlement in 2019.

He denounced Arms' move, calling it an attempt to obtain higher royalty rates and interfere with its product roadmap as both companies expand into new markets.

Nuvia technology has been used in Qualcomms Snapdragon processors for PCs, phones and cars. Its new smartphone processors launched this year and have been adopted by companies such as Samsung, and its PC chips count Microsoft and Dell among their customers.

Rather than seeking damages, Arm is asking the court to order Qualcomm to destroy products that infringe on its intellectual property. In October, while Qualcomm held its annual conference in Hawaii, Arm formally informed Qualcomm that it would terminate its architecture license if Qualcomm did not remedy the alleged violation.

Such an extreme measure would have a major impact on Qualcomm, which relies on the Arm architecture for most of its new products. But it would also cost Arm an important customer as it seeks to expand the reach of its ecosystem, buoyed by its enthusiasm for artificial intelligence following a successful IPO last year.

Qualcomm countersued Arm for this decision. A 60-day notice period triggered by Arm, which requires Qualcomm to address its concerns or risk losing its license, will expire around the same time the trial is expected to end.

Nuvia was co-founded and led by Gerard Williams, a former Apple chip designer who is now a senior engineer at Qualcomm, who is also expected to testify at the trial.

If Arm convinces the jury of his case, it will then be up to the federal judge overseeing him, Maryellen Noreika, to decide what remedies to impose. An appeal by the losing party is also likely.
