Alabama football DB starter will transfer to Notre Dame: Reports
Former Alabama football defensive back DeVonta Smith has reportedly found his new college home. Smith will transfer to Notre Dame, according to multiple reports.
On3's Pete Nakos first reported the move. Smith, one of Alabama's starting safeties this season, entered the portal as the current entry window opened, following the conclusion of the 2024 regular season.
Smith spent four seasons in Tuscaloosa. He struggled with injuries in 2023, but persevered through the change in coaching staff and finally got on the field this season.
He was UA's primary starter at the safety position. Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack calls the Husky. Smith was responsible for 30 tackles, one forced fumble and five pass breakups in 2024.
Smith will join a Notre Dame team that will appear in the College Football Playoff. The Fighting Irish open the CFP with a first-round home match against Indiana, the event's No. 5 seed.
Meanwhile, Alabama's 2024 season is still not over. The Crimson Tide will face Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl after missing the CFP field by one spot due to losses to Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma.
That game will kick off on December 31st at 11am CT in Tampa. It airs on ESPN.
The transfer portal will remain open for student access through December 29.
