Former Indonesian President Jokowi and his family expelled from PDI-P after joining Prabowos camp
JAKARTA, December 17 Former President Joko Widodo; his son, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka; and his son-in-law, Bobby Nasution, were officially expelled from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) after a year-long division that began before the presidential election.
According to Jakarta GlobePDI-P president Megawati Soekarnoputri signed the letters of dismissal of the three personalities on December 14, a party official said yesterday.
As of the signing of the dismissal letter, the PDI-P Central Committee does not bear any responsibility for the actions taken by Joko Widodo, said Komaruddin Watubun, head of the PDI-P Honorary Council.
Widodo, better known as Jokowi, began his political career very early in the PDI-P. The party supported him in his rise to national prominence. The PDI-P sustained his successful campaigns for mayor of Solo in 2005 and governor of Jakarta in 2012, and played a vital role in his two presidential victories in 2014 and 2019, cementing the party as a major force behind his political rise.
However, as reported Jakarta Globetensions arose when Gibran was named the running mate of Prabowo Subianto, the presidential candidate opposed to the PDI-P's choice, Ganjar Pranowo, in October last year.
The Prabowo-Gibran list won the presidential election in February and was inaugurated on October 20.
Jokowi's apparent support for Prabowo was seen as a betrayal of Ganjar's candidacy, although Jokowi secured two presidential terms with the support of the PDI-P. Gibran's alliance with Prabowo further strained relations, as he had already won Solo's mayoral election with the PDI-P's endorsement.
Bobby Nasution, who was elected mayor of Medan with the support of the PDI-P, also joined Prabowos' Greater Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) and is now running for governor of North Sumatra, where his opponent is the PDI-P candidate, Edy Rahmayadi.
In addition to the dismissal of Jokowi and his family members, the PDI-P also announced the expulsion of 27 other party leaders.
