JAKARTA: The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) officially dismissed former President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) after he rejected the party's candidate in the February elections and supported Prabowo Subianto's campaign, local media reported.

Its president, Megawati Soekarnoputri, who made the decision, also fired Jokowi's eldest son and son-in-law, according to the party's top official, Komarudin Watubun.

It is understood that more than 20 party members have also been fired.

“I received direct instructions from the president to officially announce the dismissal,” Watabun said in a video obtained by Bloomberg News.

Even though Jokowo's feud with his former party has become public, his ouster will fuel speculation about his plans as he seeks to preserve his legacy after a decade in power.

Analysts believe that the ever-popular politician could start his own party or join another (political) group to strengthen his family's support base.

After beating Prabowo twice in the presidential election, Jokowi supported his rival in this year's elections, with his eldest son successfully running to become Prabowo's vice president.

He also exerted his influence by electing his son-in-law as governor of North Sumatra, while some of his former key ministers are now part of Prabowo's cabinet.

The PDI-P, which supported Jokowi in two presidential campaigns, accused the former leader of interfering in a controversial Constitutional Court ruling, paving the way for his eldest son to run for vice president .

However, Jokowi has long denied these accusations.
