NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Kuwait on December 21-22 to strengthen bilateral ties and energy cooperation, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the West Asian country in 43 years.
Modi, who is visiting at the invitation of Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, will hold talks with the country's leaders and interact with the Indian community, the ministry said on Wednesday of Foreign Affairs.
This visit will be an opportunity to further strengthen the multifaceted ties between India and Kuwait, the ministry said.
Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visited Kuwait in 1981, while then Vice President Hamid Ansari visited the country in 2009. The last high-level visit from both sides was was that of the Kuwaiti Prime Minister in India in 2013. India and Kuwait share close ties rooted in history and underpinned by strong economic and people-to-people ties. India is one of Kuwait's major trading partners and bilateral trade stood at $10.47 billion in 2023-24. Indian exports increased from $1.56 billion in 2022-23 to $2.1 billion in 2023-24, with a year-on-year growth of 34.7%.
Kuwait is India's sixth largest crude supplier, supplying 3% of the country's energy needs, while the Kuwait Investment Authority's investments in India exceed $10 billion.
Indians make up Kuwait's largest expatriate community, with around a million residents, and both sides have benefited from mutual support in difficult times. The Indian rupee was legal tender in Kuwait until 1961, symbolizing enduring economic ties.
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar visited Kuwait in August, while Kuwait Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya visited India earlier this month.
India and Kuwait have institutionalized their cooperation through the Joint Cooperation Commission (JCC), established during the visit of Kuwaiti foreign ministers to New Delhi in December. The two sides also established seven new joint working groups (JWGs) in the areas of trade, investment, education, technology, agriculture, security and culture. These complement three existing GTCs in the areas of hydrocarbons, health and consular issues.
