Britain's youngest knife killer sentenced to longer sentence for murder of Shawn Seesahai | uk news

Britain's youngest murderers have been given longer sentences after the murder of James Bulger after judges said their original sentences were too lenient.

The two unidentified boys, now aged 13, were jailed for life with a minimum term of eight years and six months for the murder of 19-year-old Shawn Seesahai in Wolverhampton on November 13 last year.

The Attorney General applied to increase these conditions, arguing they were “overly lenient” because this was a “particularly serious type of case”.

Appeal Court judges have now agreed to change the sentence to 10 years.

This means that after the time they have already spent in custody, the pair will not be eligible for release until they are in their early 20s.

The killers, who were both 12 years old at the time of the attack, were described as the country's 'youngest vicious murderers' when they were sentenced in September.

Mr Seesahai was stabbed in the heart and lung and suffered a skull fracture during the attack at East Park's Stowlawn Stadium.

One of the wounds he suffered was 23 cm deep and went almost through his body.

The two killers accused each other of wielding the machete but were found jointly responsible for the attack. Judge Tipples called it “appalling and shocking”.

The boys are believed to be the youngest to be convicted of murder in Britain since the 11-year-old killer of James Bulger in 1993.

In his first sentencing, Judge Tipples said the boys' 'emotional maturity', age and other factors as they grew up should be taken into account.

She added that the “spur of the moment attack” was not premeditated and that one defendant was “extremely vulnerable” and had been “groomed and exploited” by others.

But the victim's mother Manashwary and father Suresh Seesahai said they were disappointed by the initial minimum sentence.

'Cruel and senseless' attack

Commenting on Thursday's new sentence, Mr Sishai's family said: “Shaun's life was taken in a cruel and senseless act of violence.”

“He was attacked with a weapon he carried with apparent intent and we are devastated and distressed to think of what he had to endure.

“While no amount of punishment can bring Sean back, I believe today’s decision better reflects the severity of the actions that took him from us and acknowledges the tremendous loss we live with every day.”

Judge 'excessive allowance'

At the Court of Appeal on Thursday, Paul Jarvis, representing the Solicitor General, said Judge Tipples had taken the mitigation features “significantly too far”.

Justice William Davis, sitting with Justice Bennathan and Justice Nicholas Dean KC, agreed: “It is with some hesitation and sadness that we reach the conclusion that the minimum conditions imposed by Judge Tipples were overly lenient.”

Mr Seesahai, originally from Anguilla in the Caribbean, had been staying in Birmingham while recovering from cataract surgery and hoped to become an engineer in the UK.

Prosecutors said the unprovoked attack took place when he and a friend encountered a group of children in a Wolverhampton park. Mr Sishai was punched, kicked and stabbed repeatedly while on the ground.

The boys, known in court only as BGI and CMB, have been held in secure accommodation since the attack.
