As the death toll from the devastating earthquake rises, search and rescue specialists in Port Vila in Vanuatu are still hoping to find survivors in collapsed multi-storey buildings.
The President of Vanuatu said, on Thursday evening, that the police estimated the death toll from the earthquake at about 16 people, while more than 200 others were injured.
New Zealand's Urban Search and Rescue team focused on finding survivors in the Billabong building, which fell in Tuesday's 7.3-magnitude earthquake.
The crew joined their Australian counterparts who had arrived 24 hours earlier. According to ABC, seven survivors have been recovered from the rubble so far.
Up to eight people are believed to be trapped in another building.
Brendan Nally, deputy national commander of New Zealand Fire and Emergency, said the team was focusing all its efforts on finding survivors.
“There is an area that is clearly not survivable and heavy machinery is clearing the rubble to get to the survivable areas.
“We have all this high-tech equipment, but we still do it really old school. Everyone is quiet, stop and listen. Listen for knocks and possible signs of life.”
He said the crew was aware of the level of devastation, had responded to the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes, and was searching layer by layer for survivors.
“The fluctuations exist within our knowledge base,” he said.
“It's a job of removing layers – lifting floors and walls from the pile of rubble, then searching for people, trapped or otherwise.”
In addition to helping clear the landslide that was blocking the main port, a few team members were also helping to stabilize the flattened High Commission building, Nali said.
Although everyone was able to escape the building during the quake, he said the risk of injury from further collapse due to aftershocks is high and should be mitigated.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
