The second Daniel Ford Elite Youth Table Tennis Invitational Championships takes place today at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
After a successful two-day coaching clinic, players will put their new skills to the test in their bid to dethrone 2023 African Games gold medalist Matthew Kuti. tournament organized by the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) and funded by the British Daniel Ford International.
Kuti, who has been in excellent form of late, will be able to rely on his experience and fame at various international tournaments this year, including the African Championships in Ethiopia. He expects stiff competition from perennial rivals like Muiz Adegoke and Abdulbasit Abdulfatai.
The U-19 Championship promises excitement as Kuti faces a star-studded line-up during the two-day tournament.
Determined not to let his guard down, Kuti said he is ready to take on regular opponents, especially Muiz Adegoke, who may be paired with him in doubles.
Adegoke, who is yet to fulfill his potential at the national level, will be hoping to emulate his success in doubles against the tournament's top players. I can't wait to get to the table because this won't be a one-sided tournament. More and more young players are coming from various continental tournaments in Botswana, he said.
A determined Adegoke admitted that he would take his game to the next level this year to challenge favorites like Kuti. I hope to make it to the finals this year and when I get there, anything can happen. It won't be easy because everyone is playing well, but I am confident that I can turn the tide against everyone on the table, he added.
For national coach Dotun Omoniyi, organizing the clinic would make this year's tournament competitive as the players never hide their intention to humiliate each other.
