Coffee and tea consumption is associated with lower risk of head and neck cancer
A recent analysis of data from more than a dozen studies found that drinking coffee and tea is associated with a lower risk of developing head and neck cancers, including cancers of the mouth and throat. Head and neck cancer is the seventh most common cancer worldwide, with increasing incidence in low- and middle-income countries. Numerous studies have evaluated whether coffee and tea consumption is associated with head and neck cancer, but the results are inconsistent.
To provide further insight, the researchers looked at data from 14 studies by various scientists associated with the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology Consortium, a collaboration of research groups from around the world. Study participants completed a questionnaire regarding their previous intake of caffeinated coffee, decaf coffee, and cups of tea per day/week/month/year.
Researchers collected information on 9,548 head and neck cancer patients and 15,783 cancer-free controls and found that compared to non-coffee drinkers, those who drank four or more cups of caffeinated coffee daily had lower head and neck cancers. They were found to be 17% less likely to develop cancer. Overall, you are 30% less likely to get oral cancer and 22% less likely to get throat cancer. Drinking three to four cups of caffeinated coffee was found to reduce the risk of hypopharyngeal cancer (a type of cancer that forms at the bottom of the throat) by 41%.
Drinking decaffeinated coffee was found to reduce the chance of oral cancer by 25%. Drinking tea was associated with a 29% lower chance of hypopharyngeal cancer. Additionally, drinking less than one cup of tea per day was associated with a 9% lower risk of overall head and neck cancer and a 27% lower risk of hypopharyngeal cancer, whereas drinking more than one cup per day was associated with a 38% higher chance of laryngeal cancer. .
Although there have been previous studies on coffee and tea consumption and cancer risk reduction, this study examines the effects of coffee and tea on different areas of head and neck cancer, including the observation that even decaffeinated coffee has some positive effects.
