The UK is set to enjoy unusually warm temperatures this Christmas.

The Met Office predicted a “grey” Christmas rather than a white one, with sunny skies and “very mild” temperatures.

The mercury is expected to remain at around 12-13 degrees across most of the UK on Tuesday and until Christmas, around 5 degrees warmer than at this time of the year.

National Weather Service meteorologist Dan Stroud said there will be plenty of sunshine along with mild winter conditions.

He said, “Clear weather is expected to continue in the east and clouds in the west.”

“Temperatures will rise significantly and remain very mild on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

“Temperatures will be well above average in England and Wales, with a bit of grey.”

The next few days will look somewhat gray with drizzle and fog developing over the western hills, especially the northwest.

The north-west tip of Scotland can expect heavy rain at times, while areas to the north-east of the Highlands are most likely to get a sunny break.

The somewhat murky conditions are due to airflow over the Azores, bringing daytime temperatures significantly into the double digits, resulting in much milder conditions.

There are certainly no signs of a white Christmas.

It comes after a 'perfect storm' of bad weather and road congestion caused widespread disruption, with a yellow warning for winds in place until Sunday night.

The warning applied to Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and several parts of England.

Heathrow Airport canceled around 100 flights on Sunday and passengers were advised to check with their airline before travelling.

Belfast City Airport was forced to take emergency action on Sunday after a plane's nose wheel collapsed during a hard landing in bad weather.

Although there were no passengers on board, the accident closed the runway for most of the day and chaos continued into Monday morning.

Meanwhile, an amber warning for ice has been issued for parts of northern Scotland from Sunday night until 10am on Monday.
