The Met Office has revealed where and when snow is expected to fall in the UK over the Christmas period.

December 25 itself is expected to be a gray Christmas rather than a white Christmas, with sunny weather and extremely mild temperatures.

However, as temperatures drop around the end of the year, snow is likely to fall in some areas.

Forecasters predict: By the turn of the year, it looks more likely that colder and more showery conditions will make at least some inflow to northern and possibly central regions, increasing the risk of impacts from ice, sleet and snow.

But conditions are expected to improve earlier this week after bad weather and road congestion caused widespread disruption over the Christmas holidays.

More than 100 flights were canceled on Sunday at Heathrow, England's busiest airport, dozens of ferry routes were grounded in Scotland and Ireland and Northern Rail canceled all trains on 11 routes.

Snowfall over the weekend also caused chaos on the M62, with one lane closed as millions flock to the country's motorways over the festive period.

Looking ahead to the coming week, Met Office Meteorologist Dan Stroud said: “Further east, we expect sunny weather and a lot of clouds to the west.”

Temperatures will rise significantly and be very mild on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Temperatures will be well above average in England and Wales, with a hint of grey.

Average temperatures were expected to be around 12C or 13C on Christmas Eve and 11C or 12C on Christmas Day. The typical average at this time of year is 7C or 8C, so about twice the normal temperature.

Overnight temperatures in Scotland on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be very mild.

Dan Harris from MetOffice added: Temperatures are expected to be generally mild. So if you're expecting snow to fall across the country on Christmas Day, you'll be disappointed.

However, temperatures are expected to return to normal levels as the new year begins.
