Kieran Mishchuk, an 18-year-old British reformist, has won the Milton Regis Swale parliamentary by-election.

An 18-year-old who left school this summer has won Reform UK's first ever seat in parliament.

Kieran Mishchuk has been elected as the youngest member of Swale Council, just months after leaving Borden Grammar School.

The water supplier, who has lived in the Sittingbourne area all his life and only left school in July, won the seat of Milton Regis with 272 of the 802 votes cast.

Cllr Mishchuk attributed his victory partly to the national political outlook, which he also pointed to as a reason for the low turnout of 17 per cent.

He said: There are a lot of reasons why people voted for me, so I'm not going to take all the credit.

The national situation was grim and this caused people to turn against the Labor Party. Labor's intervention in Highstead Park was also a turning point for some.

There was also a lot of voter apathy, with many saying they would not vote for anyone at the door.

Although I don't have the life experience that other lawmakers have, I will listen well and gain experience.

I have lived on the edge of Milton for 16 years and have lived in the Sittingbourne area all my life, so I know the problems facing the area.

I know I am capable and I will listen to the problems people have, so my age should not affect my role.

I spoke to the Milton Regis Society who are campaigning to introduce a 20mph speed limit on the High Street and I am following suit as the speeding problem arises on our doorstep.

I will also talk to the police about low level youth crime which needs to be dealt with seriously.

I want to get along with other Swale Councilors and don't want to be shortchanged on local issues.

I am truly grateful to everyone who voted for me, and I will work not only for those who voted for me, but also for those who did not.

Mr Mischuk, who lives in Homewood ward but plans to move to Staplehurst Road, said he first became interested in politics when Donald Trump was first elected.

He chose Reform Britain because of what the party stood for.

He said it's all about community, family and country. There was a vacuum in the party where I could move forward, but that vacuum is being filled quickly.

It is also a new party and different from the existing ones and we want to make the country better.

If I do my job well, I will become a member of the National Assembly, but I am still young and have a lot to learn.

Nigel Farage, British reform leader and member of parliament

He said he had received an invitation from Reform UK headquarters in London for a post-Christmas visit but had yet to hear from the party leader, Nigel Farage. He said he expected a visit because he was very busy.

The vote counting took place at Swale House on Thursday 19 December and took about 40 minutes.

Swale Independents' candidate Tom Lee came in second with 208 votes, while Labor representative Nicola Nelson came in third with 200 votes.

Conservative Party candidate Islay Walker received 99 votes and Liberal Democrat candidate Marc Wilson received 23 votes.

This election was triggered when Rep. Angie Valls (Lab), who was elected in the autonomous district election in May last year, resigned on October 28 due to work commitments.

This left one of the two seats empty, the other being held by Cllr Tony Winckless (Lab).

Only 17% of 4,700 people voted, compared to 40% in the borough election, where 1,888 votes were cast.

This reflects a decline in electoral participation in the borough, which saw record low general election turnout in the seats of Sittingbourne and Sheppey.

The results also show the rise of Reform UK in the region, with the party performing well in the July election.

Candidate William Fotheringham-Bray won the seat with 10,512 votes to Labor's Kevin McKenna's 11,919 in a tight three-way contest.

New Labor Swale Council deputy leader Cllr Ashley Wise said by-elections were always going to be difficult due to the approach to Christmas and this presented a good opportunity for the rebel party.

He took up the role following the collapse of the parliamentary coalition that left Labor in full power after the Green Party broke away and the Swale Independence Party was ousted.

Representative Kemsley said, “It is undeniable that the result of the Milton Regis by-election was a blow.”

Labor Tony Winckless is an incredibly active councillor, deservedly recognized across the ward, and this has been repeated to us time and time again on the doorstep.

I can confidently say that these results are not a judgment on our excellent candidate Nicola Nelson, or on the hard-working local Labor councilors who will continue to work on behalf of our residents.

There was undoubtedly frustration expressed at the ballot box, but there was also a recognition at the door that there was no magic wand or magic money tree the government could use.

It will take some time for the ground to feel that the new Labor government is making significant investments to restore public services, and I am confident that people will begin to see results.

But over the past 14 years, much has been accomplished that cannot be solved overnight. It will take time. In the meantime, the Labor government in Westminster must continue to focus on the everyday problems people face.

There are very important issues ahead for local government and the Labor group will continue to work across party lines for the interests of Swale.
