Deadly bird flu outbreak will affect 100,000 birds in Stearns County and other parts of Minnesota this month
(KNSI) – In the past two weeks, nearly 100,000 birds have been diagnosed with the deadly highly pathogenic avian influenza A, including several thousand in central Minnesota.
The most recent outbreak occurred in Stearns, where 12,730 turkeys in a commercial flock were found to be infected with avian influenza. Chippewa County reported 54,798 turkey cases, while Houston and Fillmore counties had 57 and 28,697 cases, respectively. In November, nearly 300,000 birds were lost to avian influenza in Meeker and Martin counties.
The USDA says infected herds are being isolated and euthanized to prevent the spread of infection. Symptoms of sick birds include the inability to fly, drooping of the head, swimming in circles, difficulty standing upright, trembling, and loss of coordination.
Wisconsin confirmed its first human case of bird flu on December 20th. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has detected a positive case of H5N1 in Barron County. Wisconsin DHS said the person's infection is linked to an infected commercial herd in the same county. DHS said the risk to the general population of Wisconsin is low. The CDC says symptoms can be similar to the flu, but it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
In Minnesota, clusters of infected people are growing, but no human cases have been reported. State authorities are monitoring the situation.
