The number of deaths rises after the earthquake in central Japan, with 200 cases awaiting review

The number of deaths linked to the strong earthquake that struck Ishikawa Prefecture and surrounding areas in central Japan is expected to rise on New Year's Day 2024, as another 200 deaths may be included, according to the municipalities involved.

About a year after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake devastated the Noto Peninsula, the death toll has surpassed 500. The majority of deaths, mostly in Ishikawa, include those related to the effects of the earthquake, such as deaths in evacuation centers.

They added that applications related to more than 200 deaths in Ishikawa have not yet been processed for recognition as earthquake-related deaths.

These deaths are counted separately from the approximately 230 people killed during or immediately after the quake, including those trapped under collapsed buildings.

Once people's deaths are identified as disaster-related, bereaved families are eligible to receive up to 5 million yen ($32,000) based on the Law on Providing Disaster Condolence Grants.

Of the nearly 270 certified post-earthquake deaths in Ishikawa, about 20 percent occurred three or more months after the disaster, and most victims were in their 70s or older, according to the prefectural government.

Of the 115 cases in which factors that contributed to deaths were revealed as of December 24, “distress after the earthquake and fear of aftershocks” was the most cited, with 89 cases, followed by “severed life arteries, such as electricity and water,” with 53 cases. “Life in evacuation centers” was at 37 cases, she said.

Besides Ishikawa, a small number of cases have been identified as post-disaster deaths in Niigata and Toyama prefectures.

Municipalities have so far been able to process fewer than 20 people each month, resulting in a backlog of applications.
