Bomb squad clears car near Capitol after employee drives onto sidewalk amid high security – NBC4 Washington

A man seen driving on a sidewalk near the U.S. Capitol Thursday morning was arrested and a bomb squad cleared a suspicious car, authorities said.

Law enforcement is on high alert following a deadly truck attack in New Orleans and a truck explosion in Las Vegas a day earlier.

U.S. Capitol Police officers took no chances when they saw a driver in a gray sedan with Virginia license plates driving down the sidewalk and into a grassy area near Constitution Avenue and from 3rd Street NW around 10 a.m. The officers handcuffed the man.

We didn't know what we had at that time. We were certainly concerned about what was in the car, said Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger.

Video from NBC Washington shows officers arresting the man. Dozens of police officers in cars and bicycles intervened in the neighborhood and closed the streets. People were asked to avoid the scene while bomb squad officers searched the car.

Police quickly realized the man had a reason to be in the area: He was a telecommunications employee working at a temporary cell site for Inauguration Day.

Turns out he's a contractor who works in the area and he just decided he was going to park on the sidewalk, Manger said.

The drivers' trajectory was of great concern to our officers, and they acted quickly, he added.

The driver, a 26-year-old Georgian man, was charged with careless driving.

Residents and visitors can expect high security around the U.S. Capitol during several high-profile events in the coming days, Manger said:

Former President Jimmy Carters funeral will take place on January 9. The People's March will take place on January 18. President-elect Donald Trump will hold an Inauguration Day rally on January 19 at Capital One Arena and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be held on January 20.

Manger said he had a fear about the events on the horizon.

The biggest fear of law enforcement across the country is that lone wolf who gets no warning and just shows up and does something. That's exactly what happened in New Orleans, he said.

People can expect to see officers, including with long guns, all over Capitol grounds in the coming days, the chief said.

Several law enforcement agencies are expected to hold a news conference Friday about security preparations.
