Trump says he and China's Xi spoke through aides
WASHINGTON – US President-elect Donald Trump said on January 6 that he and Chinese leader Xi Jinping had spoken through representatives and that he believed the two leaders would get along.
“We've already spoken. We've spoken through their representatives,” Trump said in an interview with conservative talk show host Hugh Hewitt.
Trump, who takes office on January 20, described Mr. Xi as a strong and powerful man who he said was revered in China.
“And I think we'll probably get along very well, I predict,” he said. “But you know, it has to be a two-way street,” Trump added, repeating an accusation that China has “ripped off” the United States economically.
Trump has invited Mr. Xi and other foreign leaders to his inauguration in Washington later in January, but experts say the Chinese leader is unlikely to attend.
Trump has appointed many China hawks to key positions in his new administration, including Sen. Marco Rubio as secretary of state.
Trump also said he would impose additional 10% tariffs on Chinese goods unless Beijing does more to end trafficking in the highly addictive narcotic fentanyl.
He threatened to impose tariffs of more than 60 percent on Chinese goods during his election campaign. REUTERS
