Barbarbunga still shaking: the biggest earthquake of the year so far

A 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck north-east of Bárrarbunga last night, the largest earthquake in Iceland so far this year.

This is what Salome Jørøn Bernhardsdóttir, a natural hazards expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, says in an interview with mbl.is.

“But this is not unusual, to have such a large earthquake in Bararbunga,” she says, noting that last year, seven earthquakes in Bararbunga were larger than magnitude 4.

5.1 magnitude earthquake in December

It stated that in December 2024, one 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in Bararbunga, but last night's earthquake is the largest earthquake in the last 60 days.

Asked if this was the biggest earthquake of the new year, Salome said it looked like it.

Another earthquake in Bararbunga followed the big quake, but it was a 2.8 magnitude quake.

2.9 magnitude earthquake in Lake Grjótárvatn

There is ongoing seismic activity at Lake Grjótárvatn in the Ljósufjöll volcanic system, but as of 5am this morning there has been a 2.9 magnitude earthquake.

“Seismic activity has been increasing in recent months,” says Bernhardsdottir.
