“Our next priority is to visit each village, as the affected area is very wide. We aim to understand the disaster situation in each village and locate trapped individuals to provide initial reports to larger rescue teams,” said Mima.

The local earthquake data office said there were 29 earthquakes with a magnitude of three or more within 200 kilometers of the epicenter during the past five years.

The epicenter of Tuesday's earthquake was where the Indian and Eurasian plates collide. Earthquakes caused by the collision of tectonic plates are common in southwestern parts of China, Nepal and northern India.

The US Geological Survey says that more than 10 earthquakes with a magnitude of at least 6 have struck this region over the past century.
