Surgeon General aims to reduce alcohol-related cancers in the US
The U.S. Surgeon General has released a report pointing to a direct link between alcohol consumption and increased risk of cancer.1,2 The report also includes recommendations for policy changes to increase awareness of this link and reduce the number of alcohol-related cancers in the United States.
“Alcohol is a well-established and preventable cause of cancer, accounting for approximately 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths annually in the United States; “More than 13,500 people have died in traffic accidents, yet the majority of Americans remain unaware of this risk,” the Surgeon General said. The Surgeon General's report notes that alcohol consumption is the third leading cause of preventable cancer in the United States, after smoking and obesity.1 However, fewer than half of Americans surveyed in 2019 said they were aware that alcohol consumption was associated with increased cancer risk.3
The report also notes that there were 741,300 alcohol-related cancer cases worldwide in 2020.1 Additionally, studies have shown an association between alcohol consumption and at least seven types of cancer, including breast cancer, colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer, liver cancer, oral cavity cancer, pharyngeal cancer, and laryngeal cancer. “Over the past two decades, numerous high-quality observational studies and meta-analytic reviews have assessed and observed a significant association between alcohol consumption and increased cancer risk,” the report states.
For example, a global meta-analysis of 572 studies in which researchers looked at data from 486,538 cancer patients suggested that alcohol was associated with an increased risk of cancer.4 Another study of 28 million people in 195 countries and territories suggested that increased alcohol intake was associated with an increased risk of cancer.5
This report lists several measures that have the potential to reduce alcohol-related cancers in the United States.
