The New Jersey Poison Control Center issued a warning after an increase in accidental acetaminophen overdoses to treat flu symptoms.

New Jersey (WABC) — The New Jersey Poison Control Center said it is responding to an increase in calls regarding accidental overdoses of acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol.

Over two days, Poison Control Center officials said they helped several patients who accidentally overdosed while being treated for flu-like symptoms.

Dr. Howard Greller, a medical toxicologist at the New Jersey Poison Control Center at Rutgers Medical in New Jersey, said, “Many of these products contain acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, whether or not it is stated on the label. “The problem is occurring because of the lack of knowledge.” school.

The patient is currently undergoing detoxification therapy to prevent liver failure and death.

In most cases, overdose is accidental. The maximum daily dose is 4 grams, which is the equivalent of 8 extra-strength Tylenol tablets. However, it is also found in liquid medicines and about 600 types of medicines.

It is also found in cold medicines, and the combination of tablets and liquid can lead to overdose.

Experts say acetaminophen is safe and effective when used correctly and when the maximum daily recommended amount is not exceeded.

“Adults should never take more than the maximum daily dose of 4,000 milligrams of acetaminophen from all medications combined within a 24-hour period,” said Diane Calero, executive and medical director of the New Jersey Poison Control Center. I would like to emphasize that this must not be done.” at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. “It's also important to be careful not to take multiple doses of acetaminophen too far apart, which can also lead to overdose and liver damage.”

Bergen Newbridge Medical Center specializes in mental health care, and testing for acetaminophen overdose there is routine and involves a simple blood test. Symptoms can be severe.

“After acutely ingesting excessive amounts of Tylenol, patients typically develop gastrointestinal upset and vomiting,” said Dr. Greg Sorkin, chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine.

This warning also warns against pediatric drugs that contain acetaminophen.

“When giving drugs to children, especially young children, give the recommended amount of the drug based on their weight, not their age,” said Bruce Luck, managing director of the New Jersey Poison Control Center. .

The agency offered the following advice to prevent overuse of acetaminophen:

  • Select eligible products: Use only drugs designed to treat your symptoms.

  • Check the active ingredients: Check the active ingredients in every product you use to avoid duplication of ingredients, especially acetaminophen. Be aware of the total number of milligrams of acetaminophen you take from all sources in a 24-hour period. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake.

  • Avoid drug and product combinations: Do not take more than one over-the-counter product containing acetaminophen at the same time or over a short period of time.

  • Follow label instructions: Before taking or administering any medication, carefully read warnings and dosage instructions on the label, insert, or product packaging.
