Nikhil Kamath Podcast: PM Modi recalls Godhra visit after train incident: I had to keep my emotions at bay
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his first ever podcast appearance with Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, reflected candidly on the emotional weight of the 2002 Godhra train fire and how he managed to remain calm during the crisis. Speaking about the tragedy that struck just three days after he first became an MP, PM Modi revealed the immense pressure from leaders and the need to suppress personal emotions in times of national distress.
“I flew to Godhra and witnessed the painful scene…I felt everything, but I knew I had to control myself because of the position I was in,” said explained Prime Minister Modi.
The prime minister was responding to a question about how he dealt with feelings of anxiety, especially in his youth. Prime Minister Modi acknowledged that anxiety is a natural human emotion, saying: “Even I may have suffered from anxiety as a child. Everyone has different abilities and styles to deal with situations.”
He stressed, however, that his responsibilities often require him to suppress his emotions. Recalling the consequences of the Godhra train fire on February 27, 2002, PM Modi spoke about how he coped with the tragedy head on despite the overwhelming emotional tension.
“On February 24, 2002, I became an MP for the first time. On February 27, I was in the Assembly when we started receiving reports of a fire on a train and later, casualties. I immediately decided to go to Godhra,” he said.
He described the logistical difficulties he faced in reaching the site.
“There was only one helicopter available, a single engine ONGC helicopter, and they said it couldn't be used for a VIP. I argued and told them I wasn't a VIP I would take responsibility for whatever happened. I flew to Godhra and witnessed the painful scene, those dead bodies. I felt everything, but I knew I had to control myself. because of the position I am in found. I had to stay away from my emotions and my natural tendencies.
The Prime Minister reflected on the importance of keeping one's cool in times of crisis, saying: “It's difficult to say, but given the position I'm in, I have to keep my emotions aside .
PM Modi also shared another instance where he suppressed his feelings during a high-pressure situation, recalling five bomb blasts during his tenure as chief minister.
“I told the police that I wanted to go to the control room, but my security did not allow it. Later, I visited the hospitals to meet the injured. It can be said that there were agitation or anxiety in me, but I experienced it differently,” the Prime Minister said. » said Modi.
