Milo Ventimiglia's house burns and he realizes that “it's us”

Milo Ventimiglia's family home in Malibu burned down, the actor shared Thursday evening.

During an interview with CBS News, the “This Is Us” star shared that he and his wife, Jarah Mariano, who is currently nine months pregnant, evacuated their home on Tuesday, January 7, then saw the Palisades fire take over. security cameras. While the couple took as many belongings as possible, they had to leave behind the items in their recently completed nursery and left everything there. On Thursday, he returned to the area to see where his house once stood.

“[It’s] heavy,” he said, holding back tears. “You start thinking about all the memories in different parts of the house and so on, and then you see your neighbors' houses and everything around and your heart breaks.”

In the video interview, he also talked about watching it all unfold from afar. “I think there's a moment of shock where you say, 'This is real and this is happening.' Then at some point you turn it off…what's the point of continuing to watch? he said he saw the flames engulf his home via security footage. “We kind of accepted the loss.”

They accepted it because, he noted, the things they lost were just things. “We have good friends and good people that we work with and we will get through it,” he said. “Wife, baby and dog, the most important.”

This is not the first time Ventimiglia has had to talk about fire safety. For six seasons, he played Jack Pearson on NBC's “This Is Us.” In season 2, Jack saved his family from a house fire and while they all escaped, he ran back to save the dog and some items; he later died of a heart attack after inhaling too much smoke.

“It doesn’t escape me, life imitating art,” he said during the CBS interview.

In 2018, following the fire episode of “This Is Us,” Ventimiglia spoke to Variety about filming such a horrific storyline.

“There was a fire right in front of me. Just a few steps away, there were times when the hiss of the gas fire line – it's a sort of high-pitched wail – was completely overwhelmed by the score of live fire, which is deep, booming and angry and something that I hope many, many people never have to face,” he said.

At the time, the actor partnered with Duracell to promote fire safety. Now, according to CBS, he's already thinking about how to help others learn about wildfire safety in the future.
