Trump reveals meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin is underway: he wants to meet
President-elect Donald Trump said Thursday that his transition team is working to arrange a meeting between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Well, he wants to meet and we're in the process of arranging it, Trump said during a meeting with Republican governors at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
Trump, 78, said on the campaign trail that he would lead peace talks between Russia and Ukraine and boasted that he could end the brutal conflict within 24 hours of becoming president.
Although the president-elect has met with or received calls from several world leaders since his Election Day victory, he suggested Thursday that he would prefer to meet with Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping after Inauguration Day.
“President Xi, we've had a lot of communications and we've had a lot of meetings with a lot of people,” Trump said. Some have come, but I prefer to wait until after the 20th.
Trump said it was necessary to determine what form a possible meeting with Putin and Xi would take, but reiterated that President Putin wanted to meet.
He even said it publicly, and we must end this war. It's a bloody disaster, the new president said of the war in Ukraine.
Soldiers are being killed by the millions, Trump lamented, saying the death toll in this nearly three-year-old war is much higher than reported in the press.
