The Defense Department now has 500 active-duty troops and various equipment on standby to help fight the California wildfires, the Pentagon's deputy press secretary said.

“As announced by the President, 500 active-duty military personnel currently stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, are preparing to meet federal and state demands for route clearance, product distribution, research and rescue, helicopters, airlift and general support, as requested,” Sabrina Singh said at a briefing today.

Those 500 active-duty military personnel are from the Marine Corps, she said.

March Air Reserve Base, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, also now serves as a staging base for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's efforts, and Singh also said an officer from defense coordination and a support element were also activated.

The department is also preparing around 10 Navy-supplied helicopters, equipped with water-dispensing buckets, to assist in aerial fire suppression, Singh said. These Navy helicopters, along with their crews, come from Naval Station North Island, California, Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendelton, and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

“Under a long-standing memorandum of understanding with CAL FIRE, active duty units in Naval Region Southwest are prepared to provide aircraft and crews to support firefighting efforts,” Singh said. “These units are trained and certified annually by CAL FIRE to provide additional firefighting capacity when requested by the State of California and approved by the [secretary of defense.]”

More than 800 National Guard members from California, Wyoming and Nevada are already on the ground or have been mobilized to provide assistance. The Guard also operates 10 helicopters for firefighting and search and rescue operations.

“This number is expected to increase over the next 24 hours,” Singh said.

Additionally, eight Modular Aerial Firefighting Systems, or C-130 aircraft equipped with MAFFS, are activated under state authorities. The first two, Singh said, are expected to begin operations today, while the remaining six are expected to be ready by Sunday.

Firefighting operations in California are coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, in conjunction with CAL FIRE and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services. The Defense Department, Singh said, is a supporting agency in this effort.

“There are so many different fires raging in California,” Singh said. “We need to work in coordination with the state and FEMA to determine how we deal with each fire. And it's not just fires; it's about clearing the roads, it's about management, it's about how people get home them. It's all knitted together very carefully and in a complex way, it's going to take a little time, it's going to require a little coordination.”

Singh said DOD resources work best when a plan is in place to ensure they are used as efficiently as possible.

“You just don’t want to inject a lot of capacity and resources into a region without a comprehensive plan,” she said. “So that’s what we’re doing, and we’re working closely with the state to make sure their needs are met.”
