UK weather: Small Scottish town reaches -18 degrees Celsius on coldest January night in 15 years | uk news

Temperatures in a small town in northern Scotland fell to -18.7C (-1.66F) overnight. It was the coldest January night in the UK for 15 years, the Met Office said.

Altnaharra in the northern Highlands region reached its lowest temperature, while nearby Kinbrace reached -17.9C (-0.22F).

It was the coldest January night since 2010, with temperatures falling below -15C on several occasions in several locations across the UK, including -22.3C (-8.14F) in Altnaharra on January 8.

Forecasters had previously said there was a very low chance of temperatures reaching -19 degrees Celsius.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin said: “We will see the peak of this cold spell Friday night into Saturday morning.”

Temperatures across much of the UK are expected to drop again as the cold weather continues.

“There's still some time left tonight, and tomorrow (Saturday) night could be chilly as well,” said Joe Hutin, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service.

“Temperatures tomorrow night will fall significantly below freezing, mainly in the east, so also East Anglia, north-east England and northern and eastern Scotland.

“So we’ll have another cold night on Saturday, but we can expect temperatures to recover somewhat as we head into Sunday and Monday.

“I wouldn’t rule out the risk of seeing temperatures below or below freezing again Sunday night into Monday, but it won’t be as dramatic as the temperatures we’ll experience overnight tonight.”

Temperatures are expected to be more in line with seasonal norms on Monday, around 7C to 8C.

Hundreds of schools in Scotland and around 90 in Wales were closed on Thursday.

Meanwhile, staff and customers at the pub, believed to be the tallest in England, were finally able to leave on Thursday after falling snow.

Located in Richmond, North Yorkshire, Tan Hill Inn is 528 meters (1,732 feet) above sea level.

Six staff and 23 visitors were trapped, the pub said on Facebook.
