Family, colleagues remember Dave Stockdale, former Whitehorse city councilor and sports attorney

Dave Stockdale, a longtime Whitehorse city councilor and a key booster of sports in the area, leaves behind a tremendous legacy in both athletics and politics, colleagues and family members say.

Stockdale, 84, died on New Year's Day.

“His legacy is undeniable,” said Stockdale's son Ashley. “The amount of things he has done for the community in terms of his education, his sports activities, the municipal government and all that.”

Dave Stockdale was born in Rotherham, Yorkshire, England. He came to Canada to work as a teacher, starting in northern Alberta before moving to the Yukon in 1965.

In 1970 he started coaching football and table tennis. In 1983, he won a seat on the Whitehorse City Council for the first time. He would be re-elected eleven more times, making him one of the longest-serving politicians in Yukon history. He was a city councilor for more than thirty years.

“I think the very fact that the people of Whitehorse were willing to bring him back to City Council again and again to respect his views on how to lead our city is a testament to him,” said Whitehorse Mayor Kirk Cameron. “He brought wisdom, he brought perspective, he brought community.”

The legacy of former City Councilman Doug GrahamsaidStockdale can be found all over the city.

“He was very supportive of Shipyards Park,” Graham said.

“And at first we thought maybe we should use it for construction and things like that. But then again, he wanted it for people. And now that you look at it and see how well it's used and how many people there on almost a daily basis you think, Dave, I'm glad we listened to you.”

Stockdale was also a coach and a leading advocate for sports in the Yukon, particularly table tennis and football. Stockdale even won a gold medal in table tennis at the 1980 Arctic Winter Games. He also played a key role in building youth soccer, Ashley Stockdale said.

In a Facebook post, Table Tennis Yukon described Dave Stockdale as the “driving force” of the organization for years.

“Dave did all the jobs [table tennis]” the message reads. “He was a player, a coach, an administrator, a national representative and an organizer.”

Ashley Stockdale said comments like these help the family get through a difficult time.

“As he neared the end, he was in a lot of pain and obviously depressed about it,” Ashley said. “So he kind of said to me, 'What has this all been for?' And I think this kind of support that we're getting now is what it's all been for.

“He would be very happy to hear what people are saying about him now.”
