A 3.7 magnitude earthquake hits the coast near San Francisco

The San Francisco Peninsula shook three times in less than four hours on Friday, with the epicenter off Ocean Beach.

The USGS said the magnitude 3.6, 2.5 and 2.9 quakes were centered 3 to 4 miles northwest of the San Francisco Zoo.

The shaking began with a 3.6-magnitude earthquake at 7:02 a.m. The USGS said the epicenter was about 3.1 miles northwest of the zoo, and that it was about 5 miles below the surface. It was originally measured as having a magnitude of 3.7.

Then came a 2.5 magnitude earthquake at 9:39 a.m., with its epicenter roughly in the same location and about 4 miles below the surface. At 10:48 a.m., a 2.9 magnitude earthquake struck about 5 miles below the surface about 4 miles northwest of the zoo. It was originally rated at 3.0.

Authorities said there were no immediate reports of damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey's “Did It Feel Fast” for the 3.6 magnitude earthquake attracted more than 6,000 responses, from Santa Rosa to Santa Cruz and as far inland as Dublin and San Jose.

Excluding the seismically active Geysers in far northern Sonoma County, this was the largest earthquake in the nine-county Bay Area since the 3.7-magnitude epicenter at San Francisco Airport in October 2023, according to agency data. Many Bay Area residents also reported feeling a 4.2 magnitude earthquake near Aromas in September 2024.
