U-505 was initially docked outdoors, but was later moved to a climate-controlled indoor environment to better preserve it for the long term.

“We don't want to lose any of the lives and history that are embedded in U-505,” Voula Saridakis, a curator at the Museum of Science and Industry, told Business Insider. “It’s so important, historically, about what this war was about, especially the Battle of the Atlantic, which I think is often overlooked in many ways.”

Due to its size, the exhibit's concrete housing was erected around U-505, surrounded by outdoor exhibits telling the story of the submarine and the Battle of the Atlantic, including included more than 100,000 sailors and 3,500 merchant ships; Germany alone lost 783 submarines and around 30,000 crew members.

The submarine's interior has been meticulously restored to replicate the atmosphere and environment as it was before its capture more than eight decades ago, with simulated lighting and sound effects to add to the immersion.

“As our visitors pass by, they can get a sense of the lives of these submariners, the living conditions, the technology and innovation that was used in this IXC type,” said Saridakis.

In 1982, members of the US Navy's Task Group 22.3 reunited with members of the German submarine's crew in Chicago, marking the first time German sailors had seen the submarine since the war.

“Part of what we want to do is preserve the story of U-505, the battle and the capture for future generations,” Saridakis said, “and we do that by telling that story, by helping our guests understand its history and keeping it preserved for as long as possible.”
