Firefighters are bracing for more winds in Santa Ana as they continue to battle multiple fires in Los Angeles that have left several people dead and burned thousands of structures.

Gusty winds that helped propel the fires are expected to continue through Tuesday and likely Wednesday in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, with low humidity creating critical fire conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

“The #SantaAnaWind combined with dry air and very dry vegetation will maintain a high WILD FIRE RISK through Wednesday,” the NWS Los Angeles office wrote in an article published Saturday on X.

Red flag warnings were issued through Wednesday, with wind gusts of 30 to 50 mph expected and wind gusts of 50 to 75 mph in the wind-prone mountains and foothills through at least Tuesday, according to the NWS.

A red warning signal means that conditions exist for increased fire risk: a combination of very low humidity, warm temperatures and strong winds.

At least 153,000 people were forced to evacuate and another 166,000 people were under evacuation warnings as of Saturday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. On Saturday, Los Angeles County officials said they modified the county's alert and notification system to partner with the state alert center while they investigated the cause of the false evacuation alerts sent to more than 10 million Angelenos last week.

. Jae C. Hong/AP Authorities are investigating at least 16 deaths from the fires, 11 from the Eaton fire and five from the Palisades fire. Search and rescue efforts for missing people related to the fires began Saturday morning. About 40,000 acres have been burned in the Eaton, Palisades, Kenneth and Hurst fires, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Homes and businesses were among the more than 12,000 structures that were destroyed, as were many places of worship. Authorities expect more in the coming days. According to the latest figures from Cal Fire, the Eaton Fire has spread to more than 14,000 acres and is 27% contained. The Palisades Fire is more than 23,000 acres and 11% contained. The Kenneth Fire was fully contained after burning more than 1,000 acres, while the Hurst Fire, which is nearly 800 acres, was 89% contained. Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Deanne Criswell told Weekend Edition on Sunday that more than 24,000 people have already requested disaster assistance. That number is expected to increase, Criswell said. Criswell also corrected a statement made last week by President-elect Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform that FEMA was running out of money. “That’s absolutely false,” Criswell said. During an interview on NBC's “Meet The Press,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom said 14,000 people were helping fight the fires, including the National Guard. Newsom believes these fires will be the worst natural disaster in U.S. history “in terms of the costs associated with it, in terms of the scale and scope.” He also pushed back against Trump's comments and said “misinformation and disinformation are, in my opinion, neither beneficial nor helpful to any of us.” response to concerns about burglaries and looting in evacuated areas. Several advisories regarding drinking water have been issued. A “do not drink” order was issued for most of north Pasadena after the Eaton Fire damaged pump stations and reservoirs. A “do not drink” advisory was also issued for areas of Pacific Palisades and communities north of San Vicente Boulevard under evacuation orders. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said it issued the advisory because of the “potential for fire-related contaminants.” which may have entered the water system. Parts of North Pasadena have also been warned not to use tap water for drinking, cooking, washing hands or bathing until they get permission from the water district, it said Saturday the city.
