Gavin Newsom hits back at Donald Trump for wildfire blame game

California Gov. Gavin Newsom fired back at President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday for his harsh criticism of state and local governments' handling of the wildfires ravaging Los Angeles County.

Newsom, 57, suggested Trump, 78, was spreading “misinformation” and urged the new president to visit the region and see the damage for himself.

“I asked him to come out and take a look for himself,” Newsom told NBC News in an interview broadcast Sunday on “Meet the Press,” referring to a letter he sent to the president-elect on last week.

“We want to do this in the spirit of an open hand, not a closed fist,” Newsom said of cooperation between his office and the federal government.

All the elected officials with whom he does not agree know them very well,” declared the Democratic government.

Trump blasted California leaders as “incompetent” and expressed outrage at their inability to put out the fires. The new president also reiterated his well-informed demands that California do a much better job managing forests and water.

The new president has indicated he will demand sweeping reforms in California, sparking concerns among Newsom about whether Trump would leverage federal aid to secure those concessions.

“He did it in Utah. He did it in Michigan. I did it in Puerto Rico,” Newsom complained of Trump. “He did it in California before I was even governor in 2018, until he found out that people in Orange County voted for him, and then he decided to give the money.

“So he’s been working on this for years and years. It's his style. And we take it seriously.

Newsom had called Trump after his election victory, but the two have not connected or reached out to the base since.

First responders in California are scrambling to contain the Palisades and Eaton fires in particular, according to data from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Other infernos such as the Kenneth Fire, Hurst Fire and Lidia Fire have been significantly contained. In total, the wildfires have killed at least 16 people and burned more than 12,300 homes and businesses.

Newsom, when asked if the fires would be considered the worst natural disaster in U.S. history, replied: “I think it will be just in terms of the costs associated with it, in terms of scale and scope. »
