UK weather: Amber warning for fog issued by Met Office | uk news

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning warning of fog in parts of England and Wales.

Fog is expected to persist until Thursday morning, with visibility dipping to less than 100 meters in some areas, forecasters said.

The weather warning stretches from Exeter and Cardiff to Hull and includes cities including Oxford, Peterborough, Birmingham and Lincoln.

The Met Office website said: “Some fog will tend to thin and rise to low clouds across southern England and the south-east Midlands by dawn, but from south-west England through the rest of the Midlands to Lincolnshire and Yorkshire until late morning.”

The warning is in effect until 11am on Thursday.

Drivers should check conditions and ensure fog lights are working before setting off.

The Met Office said travel by bus, train, flight and ferry could all be affected by the weather.

The warning comes shortly after the end of a cold spell in the UK that saw temperatures drop to almost minus 20 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures in the small town of Altnaharra in the Scottish Highlands on Friday fell to -18.7C, making it the coldest January night in the UK for 15 years.

Last week, travel was also interrupted due to snow. Manchester Airport was forced to close both runways last Thursday, while roads in Cornwall and Devon were also closed.

Hundreds of schools across England, Scotland and Wales were also forced to close.
