China reports problems in 5 reservoirs in Tibet after earthquake

Chinese authorities in Tibet have discovered problems, including cracks, in five of 14 hydropower dams they have inspected since a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southwestern region last week, an emergency official said Thursday.

Of the five damaged dams, three have since been emptied, a Tibet emergency management official told a news conference.

He added that in Tingri County, the epicenter of the quake, the walls of a water dam tilted, leading to the evacuation of about 1,500 people from six villages downstream to higher areas.

In another water dam, monitoring devices were installed during its drainage process.

The quake, which killed at least 126 people and injured hundreds, was a reminder of the dangers posed by China and India's hydropower construction spree in one of the world's most remote and earthquake-prone regions.

Earthquakes have damaged dams in the past, particularly by landslides and rockslides. A massive earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015 knocked out nearly a fifth of its hydropower capacity for more than a year.

The January 7 earthquake in Tibet, the fifth deadliest earthquake in China since the Sichuan earthquake in 2008, destroyed more than 3,600 homes and damaged religious buildings, and its aftershocks, with a magnitude of up to 5 degrees, are still shaking the region.

The southwestern parts of China, Nepal and northern India are often exposed to earthquakes caused by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The Tengri region lies above the area where the Indian plate is thrusting beneath Tibet, and is particularly vulnerable.
