Woman accused of assaulting two referees during a Massachusetts high school hockey game
TAUNTON – A parent is accused of assaulting two referees during a boys high school hockey game in Massachusetts earlier this month, police said.
The match was between Taunton High School and Mansfield High School and took place on January 4 at the Foxboro Sports Center in Foxboro. Police said they had collected video evidence of the match and interviewed witnesses and referees.

According to the National Ice Hockey Officials Association – Massachusetts Chapters, a Taunton woman physically confronted the officials after the game, “preventing the officials from proceeding to the locker room.” The woman reportedly left before police could contact her. They said a Taunton man was also sent off the rink for verbal abuse.
The parent of one of the players will be summoned to Wrentham District Court, where a clerk will determine whether there is probable cause for criminal charges. Police have not named the parent and cannot say what the exact charges are.
“The problem is only getting worse,” NIHOA's Mike Ober told WBZ. Ober is a referee who has seen harassment before.
“We have to do better,” Ober said. “As parents you have to do better, and please stop. Let the players play, the coaches coach the referees.”
The NIHOA says it has called on the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association to do more to protect referees, such as providing an escort to and from the locker rooms.

“Taunton Public Schools works hard to create and maintain a positive, welcoming atmosphere during athletic events. We hold our student-athletes and student and adult spectators to high standards, and any violations of our spectator expectations or the expectations of the Hockomock League fans will not be tolerated and will be disciplined accordingly,” a Taunton Public Schools spokesperson said in a statement “Taunton High School Athletics has been a leader in working with professional organizations to provide training and professional development for coaches, team captains and student-athletes to eradicate hatred in sports and promote sportsmanship and respect.”
Legislative proposals to protect sports officials
“The MIAA consistently supports and has brought attention to the proper treatment and safety of all game officials,” the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association said in a statement. “Additionally, the MIAA has involved elected state officials in proposed legislation currently before the Massachusetts House of Representatives.”
According to NIHOA, this proposed legislation would establish mandatory minimum sentences for assault or “aggravated harassment” of sports officials. They said the bills have been in the State House for almost 15 years.
Previous attack by the referee
This is the second time the Taunton High School hockey team has been part of an attack on a referee during a game. In 2015, an assistant coach of the hockey team was arrested for alleged violations biting a referee's finger after a match between Taunton High School and King Philip High School.
