Arvind Kejriwal asks PM Modi to provide 50% subsidy on metro fares for students, state and Center can share burden
AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking 50 per cent subsidy on metro fares for school and college students.
He also proposed that the burden of this subsidy could be borne by the state and central government in the proportion of 50:50.
The Delhi Metro is managed in collaboration between Delhi and the central government.
What does the letter say?
I am writing this letter to draw your attention to an important issue concerning students of schools and colleges in Delhi. A large number of students in Delhi largely depend on the Metro for their daily commute to and from their educational institutions,” he said.
To ease the financial burden on students, I propose to offer students a 50% discount on metro fares. The Delhi Metro is a joint venture between the Delhi government and the central government, with equal funding (50:50). Therefore, the cost of this concession should be shared equally between the Delhi government and the central government,” Kejriwal added.
Kejriwal files his candidacy
Kejriwal on Wednesday filed his nomination for the upcoming assembly elections from New Delhi constituency and declared net assets totaling 1.73 million.
According to Kejriwal's affidavit submitted to the Election Commission (EC), his assets include 2.96 lakh bank savings and 50,000 in cash. His real estate is worth 1.7 million. The affidavit also revealed that Kejriwal does not own a house or a car.
According to the affidavit, Arvind Kejriwal's income during the financial year 2023-24 was 7.21 million.
Sunita Kejriwal's total assets are 2.5 crores, with more 1 crore worth of movable property, including 320 grams of gold worth 25 lakh and one kilogram of silver 92,000, and 1.5 crore real estate assets.
Kejriwal's wife owns a house in Gurugram and a small five-seater car, the affidavit said.
The couple has net assets 4.23 million.
