Trump says he will likely visit Los Angeles next week amid wildfires

Washington — President-elect Donald Trump said he plans to visit the Los Angeles metro area, likely late next week, after he is sworn in.

“I probably will be at the end of the week,” Trump told NBC News' Kristen Welker in an interview Saturday.

Firefighters are still battling blazes in the greater Los Angeles area, where wildfires have killed at least 27 people, destroyed thousands of structures and charred more than 60 square miles. The Palisades and Eaton wildfires continue to burn and thousands remain under evacuation orders.

Trump told NBC he wanted to come sooner, but “thought it would be better if I went as president,” saying waiting until then was “a little more appropriate.”

It would likely be his first trip away from Washington as president. It is not yet clear which affected areas the president-elect will visit.

California Governor Gavin Newsom invited Trump to visit him following the fires, although Trump took to calling him “Gavin Newscum” on social media. Trump has long criticized Newsom's approach to forest and brush management in California.

“Governor Gavin Newscum should immediately go to Northern California, turn on the water mains and let the water flow into his parched, hungry, burning state, instead of letting it flow into the Pacific Ocean,” Trump recently wrote in his Truth Social journal. platform. “We have to do it now, NO MORE EXCUSES FROM THIS INCOMPETENT GOVERNOR. IT’S ALREADY FAR TOO LATE!”

Newsom also criticized Trump, suggesting he is pushing misinformation about the cause and handling of the fires.

This won't be the first time Trump has visited California and worked with Newsom in the wake of a fire.

Trump visited Paradise, California, in 2018 after flames burned the Northern California community to the ground.
