NASA reveals IKN's appearance from the sky has changed dramatically

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US) space agency, NASA, recently released an image of the construction of the National Capital (IKN) of the archipelago which was captured by OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 and OLI on Landsat 8.

The image released by NASA Earth Observatory shows the state of the IKN area in April 2022 and February 2024. In the 2024 image, there are many significant changes, where many forest lands have been cleared for infrastructure development.

Construction of the IKN itself will begin in July 2022 in an area of ​​forest and oil palm plantation located 30 kilometers inland from the Makassar Strait. This is done to address the environmental challenges currently facing Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.

The Jakarta metropolitan area is home to 30 million people and has experienced rapid growth in recent decades. Frequent flooding, heavy traffic, air pollution and lack of clean water are common occurrences in Jakarta.
