UCLA men's tennis looks to ease nerves ahead of its home opener against San Diego
The Bruins look to overcome early season nerves and deliver a more composed performance in their second game of the year.
No. 20 UCLA men's tennis faces No. 16 San Diego on Monday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The team has a shaky performance in the opening match. Coach Billy Martin said the combination of unexpected logistical changes and first-game jitters played a role in the Bruins' slow start in their season opener.
“Honestly, I don't think (changes are needed),” Martin said. “Just relax, unwind. … Every time we have the first game of the year, there's a little bit of anxiety.
Junior Aadarsh Tripathi and senior Alexander Hoogmartens, who reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA doubles championship in November and are currently the nation's No. 10 tandem, bring upperclassmen experience to the team. However, that wisdom does not always protect them from the pressure of competition.
“We lost the doubles point here partly, probably because of a bit of nerves,” Tripathi said after Friday's match against UC Irvine.
UCLA's first game of the year was moved from Westwood to Irvine because of the wildfires in Los Angeles County, which caused some anxiety, Martin said.
As a senior with postseason experience, Hoogmartens has taken on a mentor role, providing support to freshmen and underclassmen as they adjust to the collegiate level.
“I try to guide them a bit and tell them what it feels like to play your first college match,” says Hoogmartens.
While the opening game exposed the Bruins' nerves, it also provided lessons that could pay off in the future. Hoogmartens said he was optimistic about the team's ability to recover.
“We now have experience. We will definitely play better. We will also play against a better opponent on Monday,” he said. “The first match is always a bit rusty, and then they get rid of all the stress and then the comfort.”
With veterans like Tripathi and Hoogmartens able to lead the team, Martin said he is looking for his side to find rhythm and confidence against a formidable San Diego team.
San Diego's strength lies in its depth and talent. In Oliver Tarvet and Stian Klaassen, the Toreros boast the nation's No. 1 doubles rankings – plus the No. 39, No. 72 and No. 88 duos – and three singles players – Tarvet, Savriyan Danilov and Klaassen – ranked in the top 100 in the country.
Monday offers an opportunity to improve and showcase the team's potential. If their nerves calm down and their leaders set the tone, the Bruins could make a stronger impression in their second outing.
