The changing weather patterns are largely due to Melbourne's position on Australia's southeastern coast, at the intersection of contrasting warm and cold air masses.
Meteorologist and BBC weather presenter Simon King says that “Melbourne on the coast south of Victoria is in a position where wind direction makes a difference to the weather.
“During the summer months, a wind blowing from the north can be very warm, if not hot. These northerly winds transport hot air from the desert into inland Australia, where temperatures can easily exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
“But as the wind shifts to a more southerly direction, cooler and moister air is drawn in from the Southern Ocean.
“Warm and cold air don't like to mix, so when you get these temperature contrasts it can be a recipe for large thunderstorms with hail and gusty winds.”
