Devastating tomato brown wrinkle fruit virus detected for the first time in Victoria

An exotic plant virus that has devastated South Australia's tomato industry has been detected for the first time in Victoria.

The Victorian Department of Agriculture revealed on January 17 that quarantine controls had been introduced at a Goulburn Valley greenhouse after tomato brown perilla fruit virus was discovered.

Dr Krunov said authorities were confident the virus had not spread to other parts of Victoria.

“We are working with regulators and other states and territories to negotiate the removal of fruit from properties that do not receive seedlings from South Australia,” she said.

According to Horticulture Innovation, Victoria produces about 70% of the nation's processed tomatoes, which end up in products such as canned tomatoes.

The Australian Processed Tomato Research Council said it was confident in Victoria's measures to control the tomato virus.

“We are not concerned about this new detection in Victoria as it is well within our control,” industrial development manager Matthew Stewart said.

“Our only risk is that something gets onto the site, but we do not consider that to be a relevant risk at this time.
