A 6-magnitude earthquake strikes southern Taiwan

A strong earthquake has struck southern Taiwan, injuring 27 people. The US Geological Survey said it had a magnitude of 6. There were reports of widespread damage throughout Chiayi and Tainan.

A strong earthquake struck southern Taiwan early Tuesday, injuring more than two dozen people and causing damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said a magnitude 6 earthquake struck 24 miles southeast of Chiayi County Hall at 12:17 a.m. at a depth of 6 miles. Residents have felt more than 50 aftershocks since the earthquake.

The Taiwan Fire Department reported that 27 people were sent to hospitals with minor injuries, including a one-month-old baby who was rescued from a collapsed house in Tainan, along with six others.

Two people were rescued unharmed after being trapped in two separate elevators, one in the city of Chiayi and the other in Tainan.

Reports of minor to moderate damage emerged in Chiayi and Tainan, according to the Associated Press. The National Fire Agency reported that the roofs of many homes collapsed, according to the Central News Agency.

The Associated Press reported that a fire broke out in a printing factory in Chiayi due to the earthquake, but it was quickly extinguished. The Zhuwei Bridge was also reported damaged.

Weng Changliang, chief of Chiayi County, said some roads in Dapu were “damaged and impassable.” Central News Agency reported that water and electricity were affected in the area.

No deaths were reported in the earthquake. Rescuers are still assessing the damage.

Last April, the eastern coast of Taiwan was hit by a 7.4-magnitude earthquake, the strongest in 25 years. At least 13 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured. The island is located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area in the Pacific Ocean where the Pacific plate meets several other tectonic plates, making it the most volcanically active part of the world, according to the US Geological Survey.
