Bemidji Boys Hockey creates buzz in second year of Kinnes tenure
In the past seven years, Bemidji boys hockey has had just two seasons with more than 10 wins. They won fourteen in the 2017-2018 season and only won eleven games two years ago.
But this season the team is putting together their most successful season in eight years, with the Lumberjacks having already played eleven games in their first fifteen games and currently sit seventeenth in Class AA.
There is a lot of commotion at the BCA, because in his second year as head coach, Ben Kinne has the Lumberjacks purchased for his hockey brand.
“This goes back to last year, right?” Kinne noted. “It takes some time to adapt and the players have to get used to playing hard all the time. It has become an important part for our team so far this year. They are competitive. They work very hard and it shows in wins and losses so far.”
Last year the Boys in Blue managed just nine wins and a first-round exit in the sectional tournament, but the change needed to get better started long before the first puck dropped this winter.
“I think our success so far is due to the dedication we had over the summer,” said Noah Manausau, senior captain. “Sports, skating, everyone took their time and that helps us during the season. Last year we tried to learn all the new systems, but now that we've mastered them, we're starting to implement them.
And that execution has led to better offensive and defensive production this season. The Jackets are scoring two and a half more goals per game, while also holding their opponents to almost one fewer goal per game. Add to that a senior-heavy roster with 18 upperclassmen, and you have a winning recipe.
“This group of seniors has been together the whole time, just working and growing together,” noted senior captain Nick Johnson. “We just have to keep the energy up. We have to keep doing the things we've been doing all year. Every single line, from the third to the first, every D pair. We just have to keep working together and getting wins.”
This group of Lumberjacks now has the opportunity to write their own chapter in the Bemidji history books and host the first playoff game since the 2016-17 season, the same year the Jacks last appeared in the state tournament.
“Making that state tournament a goal for every kid who plays high school hockey in Minnesota, right?” Kinne asked, smiling. “You want to play at the Xcel Energy Center. You want to play for your community, all that stuff. So that's what our kids are focusing on now. But again, it's one game at a time.”
Bemidji is coming off a 3-1 win over Roseau on Saturday. The Lumberjacks now have ten games remaining in the regular season, seven of which are at home and five against ranked opponents.
