West Nile virus found in four birds, mosquito sample in Suffolk County
The County’s Secretary of Health said eight Suffolk communities were found to have samples of West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes, while another four birds had some birds, usually mild and sometimes severely ill. It was
Samples of each mosquito that can spread the virus to people and birds have been found in Cold Spring Harbor, Copiagu, West Islip, Bohemia and Farmingville. There are four in Northport, three in Bayshore and two in Brentwood.
All samples were collected on August 6, health officials said, and advised to take precautions, especially if you are over 50 or have a weakened immune system.
Health Secretary Grace Kelly McGovern said by phone he had collected one dead bird each from Nesconset, Manorville, Bellport and East Morrices.
So far, a total of 37 mosquito samples and 6 birds have been positive this year.
County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Piggott “advises the public on our cooperation to reduce our exposure to the West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses, although there is no cause for undue concern. “.
According to Pigott, the virus can cause multiple serious symptoms, ranging from high fever to paralysis, but is found every year in Suffolk.
