Tests last Friday by USDA officials confirmed the highly contagious virus, forcing the family to euthanize the remaining birds and quarantine them for 150 days.

The outbreak began about 10 days ago, when the Thomas family noticed dead birds in one of their coops. The problem spread to the second shed, and although cold weather was initially suspected, tests revealed the presence of avian influenza.
Authorities believe the farm's free-range chickens contracted the virus from wild birds that were around their feed.
USDA representatives tested the herd using swabs and laboratory studies conducted at the University of Illinois. There are no other livestock on the premises, preventing further spread of infection, but due to quarantine, the farm's poultry operations have been suspended until summer.

“We're currently in a 150-day quarantine period, so we can't have any more chickens on the farm for 150 days, which is pretty devastating,” said Kakadoodle's Marty Thomas. He and his wife created Kakadoodle to provide people with clean, chemical-free food.
Marty Thomas is a cancer survivor. His diagnosis was thought to be related to chemicals sometimes used in agriculture.
But the family's online farmers market business, which delivers food from farms and other local producers, will remain open for the next few weeks.
