Trump administration plans to send 10,000 troops to border, use bases to detain migrants

Washington — Trump administration officials plan to deploy up to 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border and use Defense Department bases to detain migrants awaiting deportation as they plan their draconian crackdown on illegal immigration, according to an internal government memo obtained by CBS News. .

In an executive action signed by Mr. Trump upon taking office on Monday, he declared a state of national emergency along the southern border and ordered the Department of Defense to provide troops and resources “to supporting the activities of the Secretary of Homeland Security to achieve full operational control.” of the border. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Wednesday that the president had signed another executive order to deploy 1,500 troops to the southern border, where 2,500 troops are already stationed under federal order. But Customs and Border Protection's internal memo dated Jan. 21 says there are plans to send “approximately 10,000 troops” to help the agency's mission on the southern border. The Trump administration, according to the document, submitted a “[u]“restricted request” for the Pentagon to increase resources and personnel to assist CBP with technology and infrastructure.

The memo also states that the Department of Defense “may” convert its bases into “detention centers,” presumably to help CBP detain migrants who entered the United States illegally.

Additionally, the memo shows that the Trump administration plans to significantly increase the detention capacity of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is expected to be the focus of the mass deportations promised by Mr. Trump.

According to the document, ICE officials want to create 14 new detention centers that could each hold up to 1,000 migrants and four more that could each hold up to 10,000 detained immigrants.

In a briefing with reporters, a senior U.S. military official said the deployment of 1,500 troops would involve sending 1,000 troops and 500 Marines, as well as helicopters, to the California border with Texas. The official said the troops would not participate in policing because federal law generally prohibits the use of the military for maintaining civilian order. Instead, the official said they would be tasked with assisting CBP and erecting border barriers to reduce illegal crossings.

The Defense Department also announced it would “provide a military airlift to support” deportation flights of more than 5,000 migrants detained along the U.S.-Mexico border by CBP. Officials said the Department of Homeland Security would provide law enforcement on board.

Mr Trump's plans to significantly expand the US military's role in border control – historically limited to operational and administrative tasks – are part of a broader campaign to close US borders to migrants and applicants asylum.
