Trump considers 10% tariff hike on imports from China
WASHINGTON President Donald Trump said he was considering imposing additional 10% tariffs on China, as he upped the ante on the US competitor and pushed Beijing to crack down on production and distribution of fentanyl.
On his first full day in office, Trump said he was also considering Feb. 1 the 25 percent tariffs he plans to impose on imports from Canada and Mexico. He indicated Tuesday evening that he might also impose tariffs on products from China, as he answered questions from reporters at the White House for the second evening in a row.
“We're talking about a 10 percent tariff on China, based on the fact that they're sending fentanyl to Mexico and Canada,” Trump said from the Roosevelt Room. “February 1 is probably the date we’re looking at.”
The tax Trump says he is currently considering for China is lower than the 60% tariffs he threatened to impose on Beijing last year, but it is in line with the 10% tax he engaged as president-elect. The move followed a call Trump had with Chinese President Xi Jinping days before he took office. Trump said in a post on social media back when leaders discussed fentanyl, TikTok and trade.
He told reporters Tuesday night, after an announcement about AI infrastructure, that he had spoken to mothers who had lost children to fentanyl poisoning.
“And I had this conversation with President Xi the other day also about China. I said, 'We don't want this bullshit in our country. We have to stop it,'” Trump said. “I would have stopped him.”
Trump said that during their call, he and Xi also discussed the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In a response sent after this article was first published, embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu backtracked.
“We believe that there is no winner in a trade or tariff war, and we firmly defend our national interests. We are ready to maintain communication with the United States, properly handle disputes, expand the mutually beneficial cooperation and pursue the country's steady, healthy and sustainable development. China-US relations will also firmly uphold each other's interests,” Liu said in an emailed statement.
On TikTok:Trump speaks with China's Xi Jinping hours before Supreme Court ruling
Trump imposed tariffs on China during his first term, which former President Joe Biden assessed and chose to maintain and selectively increase.
The largest US trade deficit in 2023 was with China and amounted to $279.4 billion, according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis.
Experts say the tariffs could be passed on to consumers, prompting rapid retaliation and fall short of returns that Trump is considering. However, the new president has indicated that he plans to use tariffs as a negotiating tactic to get other countries to change their behavior.
