No. No. 2 MSU Hockey hosts No. 4 Minnesota for Battle of Big Ten's Best
What:No. 2 Michigan State Spartans (19-3-2, 10-2-2 Big Ten) vs. No. 4 Minnesota (19-5-2, 10-3-1 Big Ten)
When:7pm on Friday, 6pm on Saturday
Where:Munn Ice Arena
TV/radio: Friday's game can be streamed on Big Ten-plus. Saturday's game will air on Big Ten Network and can be streamed on the Fox Sports app. Both games can be heard on WJIM 1240-AM.
All-time series:Minnesota leads the all-time series 136-52-18. MSU took five of Minnesota's six points earlier this season in December, tying 3-3 before winning a shootout and then completing a 5-3 Come-from-Behind victory the next night.

Coaches: MSU coach Adam Nightingale is 62-31-7 in his third season with the Spartans. Minnesota coach Bob Motzko is 155-76-19 in his seventh season behind the Gophers' Bench.
MSU update: The Spartans are coming off a four-point weekend against rival Michigan, losing in Ann Arbor the first night before winning 4-1 the next night.
Junior forward Charlie Stramel earned Big Ten Second Star of the Week after scoring two goals and assisting on another in MSU's win. With eight goals and 13 assists this season, Stramel has surpassed his point totals in his first two full seasons at Wisconsin.
Junior forward Isaac Howard had three assists in Saturday's win, giving him a total of 36 points (18 goals, 18 assists), which leads the NCAA. Junior forward Daniel Russell, who fills in on the line with Stramel and Howard, ranks second on the team in goals and leads the NCAA with six game-winning goals.
MSU got sophomore Gavin O'Connell back into the lineup last weekend after a 10-game absence, but lost potential senior captain Red Savage to an upper-body injury in Friday's loss to Michigan.
This is a crucial series in terms of the Big Ten Regular-Season race, as the Spartans are ahead of Minnesota by just one point in the conference standings. A good performance this weekend from MSU would separate itself from the rest of the Big Ten in its quest to repeat as regular-season champions.
“This is where you want to be, to play in these meaningful games against good opponents to see where your team is,” Nightingale said. “Regardless of what happens, you want to continue to grow as a team. We grew last weekend and there is some pain in growing, but we have an opportunity to continue to grow this weekend.”
Scouting the Gophers: Minnesota is coming off a four-point weekend against Notre Dame in East Lansing, winning the first game 5-2 before falling in overtime the next night.
The Gophers and Spartans have the top two scoring offenses and defenses in the Big Ten, while Minnesota leads the NCAA in scoring offense with 4.08 goals per game. MSU is allowing 3.42 goals per game but trails Minnesota in scoring defense, allowing 1.96 goals per game to the Gophers' 2.15.
“You look at (Minnesota's) roster and how well they are coached; it's a tough test for our team, but one we're looking forward to,” Nightingale said. “The depth they have, their back end is as good as you'll find in the country, and they have some gamebreakers up and down their lineup.”
One struggle for the Gophers has been on the penalty kill, where they kill just 74.4 percent of opposing power plays in the Big Ten and 56th nationally. MSU has the best penalty-killing unit in the Big Ten, which helps considering it commits the second-most penalties in the conference.
Junior forward Jimmy Snuggerud leads Minnesota with 15 goals and 18 assists, while Connor Kurth and Brody Lamb are also in double figures. Forward Matthew Wood and defenseman Sam Rinzel are producing mightily for Minnesota, as are forward Oliver Moore and defenseman Ryan Chesley.
The Gophers have used both goaltenders, Nathan Airey and Liam Souliere, this season, with Airey generally appearing in one more game. Souilere has the better save percentage and goals-against average, but Airey earned its only win against Notre Dame last weekend.
