M5.4 earthquake shakes Zamboanga Peninsula

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the magnitude 5.4 quake of tectonic origin shook several parts of the Zamboanga Peninsula at 11:41 a.m. Thursday, January 23, 2025.

The epicenter of the quake was located in Sicon, Zamboanga del Norte, 157 kilometers east of Zamboanga City Hall, said Alan Rommel Labayog, science research analyst for Phivolcs-Zamboanga City.

Operations at offices such as City Hall, including schools, were temporarily halted as construction occupants were evacuated for safer reasons.

Schools – college, high school and primary – sent students home after the tremor.

City Hall staff and customers evacuated the 118-year-old building.

The City Administration and Management Office (CDRMO) said in a Facebook post that the quake was felt at Magnitude 4 in Zamboanga City.

“We urge everyone to remain alert and energetic. If you notice any damage to buildings, roads or infrastructure in your area, please report to our office immediately,” said Dr. Elmer Apolinario, President of CDRRMO.

He advised residents in the city to remain alert and monitor updates from Phivolcs and other concerned agencies as final dress-ups and extensions are expected. (Sunstar Zamboanga)
