I was on my way to the hairdresser. After crossing I-26 at Old Tamah Road, I saw what looked like a dead skunk on the road. It's been a long time since I've seen that. Skunks are not plentiful where I live. Evil squirrels are many in number as they plot for world domination.

In 2016, while traveling across the country, I told my youngest son that there must be skunks, living and dead, all around us because of the smell. He laughed and told me the smell was of marijuana, a cash crop, legal and not so legal, in the area of ​​Northern California we were traveling. Who knew that pot smelled like skunks?

I've smelled skunks most of my life, but I haven't seen many in South Carolina. They were once everywhere in Alabama. Not sure about their current population. Perhaps they are among the many animals struggling to combat habitat loss. I know most of the smelly rodents I'm hearing about right now are politicians. They thrive in Alabama.

When I was nine, we lived in the Cox family home for a year. Between the wild animals and the Stone boys, I got a great education. One evening a skunk came into our house. My father's great plan was to point it outward so he could chase it away or shoot it.

I don't remember the details, but my mother was behind a pantry that the skunk was hiding under. She had to chase the skunk out from under the pantry and my dad would lead it to the back porch and the yard. Mother did her part and let the terrified mammal out with a burning piece of pitch.

My father showed his tendency to get a little too excited a little too quickly by trying to hit the skunk with his broom before it left its protective enclosure. The skunk backed up a bit and unleashed a magnum load of what skunks are known for, straight into my Blessed Mother's face.

Additionally, my brother Rick and Phillip Desmond had also encountered a skunk earlier that week. It was still pretty funky.

I don't remember how long it took my mother to get rid of the smell, but it was significant. Twenty years later, Dad and I visited the long-abandoned house on a rainy day, and you could still smell the skunks' revenge. It took much longer for my mother to forgive her husband.

Seeing the skunk not only reminded me of Loudon Wainwright III and his song Dead Skunk, but also stirred those memories. While Mary Anne cut my hair, I began to explain how I had come up with an entire column on the way to her, but couldn't remember the details.
