More than 300 players serve for Table Tennis Championship in Lagos – Sport – The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News
More than 300 players from 21 states and 67 clubs have registered to participate in the annual Molade Okoya-Thomas Table Tennis Champions, which starts on January 27 and ends on 1 February in the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
The players will compete in 13 events, including singles, doubles, mixed doubles, para, deaf and lace -up categories, with improved prize money, the organizers of the championship have announced.
According to the organizers, the Mens Singles category draws the highest number of entries at 109. A total of 355 participants (231 Male and 124 women) will participate in this year's edition.
Speaking at the unveiling of the program for the championship yesterday in Lagos, a representative of the sponsors, Deji Okoya-Thomas, expressed the confidence that the first national edition will discover new talents and bring out the best in all participants.
He said: this year is particularly special, because the tournament goes beyond Lagos State for the first time in the history of the championship to become a national event. This decision comes in response to countless calls to enable the best players from all over the country to compete in a supporting environment that brings their best to the fore.
We acknowledge the in -depth impact of sport on youth, a vision that is defended by our deceased father, who wanted to use this tournament to authorize Lagos' youth. We have witnessed this vision that came to life, with many participants becoming breadwinners for their families. The performance of players such as Atanda Musa, the late Yomi Bankole, Bose Kaffo and the Evergreen Olufunke Oshonaike are testaments for the influence of the tournaments.
Moreover, a new generation of players, including Olajide Omotayo, Bose Odusanya, Muiz Adegoke, Matthew Kuti and Aishat Rabiu, came from this tournament. We believe that the elevation of the championship to a national level will help Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) select the best players to represent the country in large tournaments.
Also at the event, the African Tennis Federation (Attf) President, Wahid Enitan Oshodi, spoke his joy that the championship will finally become national, as is investigated by stakeholders.
